Message from Indigenous Futures in Engineering
Indigenous Futures in Engineering (InEng) is committed to significantly increasing the number of Indigenous engineers in Canada. To do that, we must create pathways for Indigenous youth to see themselves in these professions, build a nurturing community, and help remove barriers to achieving their dreams.
“A majority of people learn about engineering through someone they know. Approximately 0.3% of all people with an engineering degree identify as Indigenous. So, the chances of Indigenous children having an engineer as a role model in their lives are very slim.” - Melanie Howard, InEng Program Director
For over a decade, InEng has led, developed, and delivered culturally responsive K-12 outreach programs for Indigenous youth. The team has engaged with more than 70,000 community members through activities such as drop-in science events, week-long science camps, professional development training opportunities for teachers, and more. It also provides academic and social support for the growing number of Indigenous students at Smith Engineering.
In partnership with MHI Canada Aerospace Inc., your generosity supports Indigenous student success on campus and delivers specialized outreach, such as ‘launch-and-learn’ programming, where students learn about aerospace by launching their own rockets. Though the equipment and travel to First Nations communities are expensive, the work of the InEng team can truly change the trajectory of those young aspiring Indigenous engineers.
